CURATED DISCOVERIES

Ancient seas. Different families.

Marine reptiles are not dinosaurs. Meet several lineages that independently adapted to aquatic life.

ARTISTIC RECONSTRUCTION

Several reptile lineages entered the water

Mosasaurus, Ichthyosaurus, Plesiosaurus and Archelon supply four distinct marine-reptile examples: a squamate, an ichthyosaur, a plesiosaur and a turtle. None belongs to Dinosauria.

These genera also come from different times. Ichthyosaurus and Plesiosaurus are Early Jurassic examples, while Mosasaurus and Archelon belong to the Late Cretaceous. An ocean game may combine them without reproducing a historical community.

For comparison, Leedsichthys and Dunkleosteus were fishes, and Cameroceras was an invertebrate cephalopod. The ocean guide explains why the same habitat or similar silhouette is not a classification.
