What was Gasosaurus?

Gasosaurus was a predatory theropod from Middle Jurassic China. Its unusual name commemorates the industrial setting of its discovery, not a special biological ability. It is part of the dinosaur fauna known from the Dashanpu area of Sichuan.

What makes the fossil distinctive?

The principal skeleton preserves vertebrae and parts of the limbs and pelvis, but lacks a complete skull. Some bones are damaged or reconstructed. This limits how confidently researchers can compare every anatomical feature or estimate the complete animal’s proportions.

Where was it found and how was it named?

The genus was named in 1985 after fossils were recovered during construction associated with a gas facility. The relevant rocks belong to the Lower Shaximiao Formation. Construction sites can expose fossils, but the scientific value depends on recovering and recording them carefully.

What can we infer, and what remains uncertain?

Its precise position among early tetanuran theropods remains debated. That uncertainty is a reason to avoid presenting one detailed family assignment as final. A complete mounted head may be restored using comparisons rather than directly preserved Gasosaurus skull bones. When examining a museum mount or illustration, distinguish the original specimen from the parts added to make the body understandable.

Did Gasosaurus produce gas as a special defence?

There is no evidence for that. The name refers to the circumstances of discovery near a gas-industry construction project.

How can you check the evidence?

The Paleobiology Database record catalogues Gasosaurus under Tetanurae. Its linked bibliography identifies this research starting point: Z. Dong and Z. Tang. 1985. A new Mid-Jurassic theropod (Gasosaurus constructus gen. et sp. nov.) from Dashanpu, Zigong, Sichuan Province, China. Vertebrata PalAsiatica 23(1):77-83. Open the bibliographic record. A catalogue entry establishes the source trail; it does not independently verify every later illustration or behavioural claim.

Use the dated genus overview to follow the references behind the discovery and anatomy discussed above. When sources disagree, compare which specimen and rock layer each author studied. A reconstructed whole animal can combine original bones with comparisons to relatives; those two kinds of evidence should not be confused. The account above explains the particular limits that matter for Gasosaurus, rather than supplying unsupported size, speed or lifespan figures.

Quick answers

Where have Gasosaurus fossils been found?
The discoveries discussed here come from China. Modern place names describe discovery locations, not a complete ancient geographic range.
When did Gasosaurus live?
It is placed in the Jurassic period. See the discovery discussion for qualifications about the particular rock layers and dating.
Where can I compare Gasosaurus with related dinosaurs?
Follow the related field notes below. Comparisons explain shared anatomy; they do not imply that all the animals lived together.
